What Are Cannabis Edibles?

Cannabis edibles are delightful treats infused with THC, crafted to provide the celebrated effects of cannabis through delicious, easy-to-consume snacks. Unlike smoking or vaping, edibles introduce THC through your digestive system, leading to a longer-lasting and often more intense effect, making them a favorite among those who prefer a prolonged experience.

Edibles come in many forms, including gummies, mints, hard candy, chocolates, baked goods, and more, each offering a unique taste and experience. At Old Pal, we’ve taken creativity to new heights with our specially formulated edibles that ensure every bite is as enjoyable as it is memorable.

Understanding THC and Its Effects

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that gives you the "high." In edibles, THC offers a different kind of high compared to smoking because the liver processes it into a compound that offers longer-lasting effects that can often feel a bit more potent than a hit from a joint.

While the effects of THC can include euphoria, relaxation, and sensory enhancement, the experience can vary widely depending on the dose and your individual response. This is why starting with a low dose and going slow is crucial, especially for beginners.

Many people tend to prefer edibles because once you find the right dose, you can dial up a predictable experience every time. Whereas with smoking or vaping, you might have a different experience based on the strain, potency of that strain, or even how big of a hit you take.

The Nitty Gritty of Dosing THC Edibles for Beginners

Okay, now we have the basics dialed about what qualifies as a cannabis edible, and how it might affect you. But let’s dig into the mechanics of the experience.

What Is a Good Starting Dose?

For beginners, a good starting dose would be a low amount of THC, typically between 2.5mg to 5mg. Everyone responds differently to THC, so while your pal might take 5mg and not feel much at all, you may find yourself feeling incredibly high with a case of the giggles. Maybe that’s a good thing, maybe you were hoping for less!

Either way—your best bet is to start small and wait at least 90 minutes before taking more. There’s an old adage with cannabis edibles, and we’re sticking to it: you can always take more, but you can’t take less.

How Long Does It Take for Edibles to Kick In?

Edibles take longer to start working compared to inhaled cannabis. Typically, you can expect to feel the effects within 30 minutes to 2 hours. The onset time can vary based on factors like your metabolism, the last meal you ate, and the potency of the edible.

You might notice the initial effects as a slight pinch behind your eyes or a warm, tingly sensation. That’s when you know it’s working!

How Long Do the Effects Last?

The effects of cannabis edibles can last much longer than smoking or vaping—anywhere from 4 to 12 hours, with peak effects occurring around 2 to 3 hours after consumption. This extended duration makes edibles particularly suitable for those seeking long-lasting relief or enjoyment.

The more you take, the longer the high can last. Again, go slowly and start small.

Choosing the Right Edible: Tips and Tricks

When selecting an edible, consider factors like dosage, flavor, and, most importantly, what you like to eat. Cannabis edibles should not only offer the effects you crave, but flavors you enjoy.

When we set out to make our own edibles, we wanted to make treats that not only offered an incredible buzz, but that were fun to eat and easy to dose. We landed on two products that we think you’ll love:

Cosmic Chews

These chewy, sweet, fruity gummies are perfect for entry-level cannabis consumers. Each piece contains 5mg of hemp-derived THC and can be easily cut in half if you would like to start with a smaller dose. We offer three tasty flavors: Berry Bliss, Tangerine Trip, and Sour Apple.

Cosmic Crispies

Our cosmic crispies are reminiscent of the famous childhood snack, but make no mistake—these are for grown-ups only. Cosmic crispies are best for more experienced cannabis consumers, or great to cut in half and share with a pal. They contain 10mg THC each and come in two fun varieties: Cocoa and Rainbow.

Are THC Edibles Legal?

The legality of THC edibles varies by location, primarily depending on whether they are derived from marijuana or hemp. In states where cannabis is legalized, both hemp-derived and marijuana-derived edibles are typically legal. However, THC edibles derived from marijuana are subject to state regulations and are only available in licensed dispensaries.

Hemp-derived edibles with less than 0.3% THC are legal at the federal level due to the 2018 Farm Bill and can be purchased online and shipped across most state lines. All of our edibles are made with Delta-9 THC derived from hemp, with the intention of making these tasty treats available everywhere hemp is allowed.
